We have adopted the inner-city York elementary school named for our former Rabbi, Alexander D. Goode (one of the Four Chaplains who died during World War II), and are working to support its educational programs.<\/p>\n<p>We are launching our second back-to-school supply drive, this year adding backpacks at the principal\u2019s request. We provide in-classroom helpers, including readers. We improved playground safety by procuring a donation of mulch in the fall of 2014. With substantial community support we are turning the courtyard from a weed-choked eyesore into an outdoor educational space.<\/p>\n<p>Our donors have been congregants and many, many non-Jews: Nurseries, landscapers, a lumber supply company, Scouts (Eagle Scout projects) and others. We received a $1,000 grant from Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. Academic goals this year include teaching keyboarding skills to the students. (Curriculum plus instructor.)<\/p>\n<p>Goode demographics: Almost all students receive free or reduced-price lunches. One quarter are English Language Learners. One quarter have learning disabilities. Less than half are performing at or above grade level.<\/p>\n<p>Current project coordinator Nada Seidon has more than a decade of experience in youth-education-focused nonprofit management.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<strong>Religious School Technology Project<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Our school of approximately 60 students would benefit from a basic laptop in every classroom, and the extension of Wifi throughout our building.
