The Jewish Community Foundation of Central PA\u00a0<\/span>honors Temple Ohev Sholom\u2019s<\/span><\/h4>\n

Leonard Berman\u00a0And Charles Berman<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Leonard and Charles Berman grew up in Harrisburg and have belonged to Ohev Sholom for over 50 years. Both have a long history of active participation in the Jewish Community, including a stint by Leonard as President. In the days when you went to a family business to buy office supplies and furniture, you went to Cole & Co. Their family business was started by their parents, Edith and Joseph Cole after WWII. Ironically, Cole & Co. was located in the original Ohev Sholom building at 321 N. Second Street. To this day you will find Leonard and Charles working in their offices at the Direct Office Furniture Outlet. Two brothers with a Jewish work ethic that included countless hours in support of both Temple Ohev Sholom and the entire Harrisburg Jewish Community.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

How have we survived - since 1852, from meeting on the second floor of the Duncan Building at 3rd and Walnut, to 321 N. 2nd St, to the present location at Front and Seneca. We have survived through fire and flood (several) with the ongoing support of such families as the Cohens, Yoffees, Beitmans, Ellers, Coopers, Grasses, Bermans \u2026. too many to name them all.<\/p>\n

These photos show great leaders and great clergy that have contributed many volunteer hours and financial support \u2013 163 years and still strong!<\/p>\n

Foundation President Sam Levine stated, \u201cIf there is anyone more passionate than Len and Charles Berman about the need to build endowments for the sustainability of our Jewish Institutions, I have not met them. The Bermans have taught me many things\u2026..from understanding that Jews can enjoy wines other than Manichevitz to more important things like the necessity of giving back to the community\u2026.not only your money, but your time. The Bermans have played a significant role in their support of Ohev Sholom\u2026but as many can attest to, their support of the Jewish Community extends well beyond that.<\/p>\n
